Depending on his/her nationality and duration of his/her stay, a foreign scientist might need to obtain a visa before arrival. Citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area do not need a visa.
The "protocole d’accueil"
The « protocole d’accueil » is a document that allows a visa and a residence permit for scientists to be obtained. It is delivered by the host institution after the visit has been agreed. It bears the stamp of the French Préfecture, the official seal of the University and the signature of the person in charge of the host organisation. The objective of the visit and the dates of the stay must be indicated. The protocole must also certify the availability of financial resources covering the costs of the stay, insurance and the return journey. The document is sent to the visiting scientist who must deliver it to the French Consulate in his country to obtain a visa.
Applying for a visa
Citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area are not concerned. For other foreign scientists, there are several types of visa, depending on the duration of the stay.
Short stay visa (or tourist visa), valid for a stay of up to 3 months. It cannot be renewed and is also a residence permit.
Temporary stay visa, for a stay from 3 to 6 months. It cannot be renewed and does not allow a residence permit to be issued.
Long stay visa for a stay of more than 6 months, which allows a temporary residence permit for scientists to be issued. The visa must be obtained from the French Consulate in the home country before departure
