- The STAR: bus and metro
The network of buses and metro of Rennes is run by the STAR.
The city bus services are organized around the metro, which goes through the city from the North-west via the city-centre to the South-east; and suburban lines enable Rennes and its suburbs to easily accessible by public transport.
The metro and the 5 major bus lines (2, 3, 15, 16 and 19) are in service every day from about 5.20a.m (6 for buses) to 0.40a.m and from 7.30a.m to 0.40a.m on Sundays and holydays. On any other service buses turn up regularly from about 6.30a.m to 9p.m and the night bus (STAR de nuit) is in service from Wednesday evening to Sunday morning until 4.45a.m.
Tickets are valid for both buses and metro and only individual tickets [1.10€] (valid for one hour) can be purchased from bus drivers.
From the STAR offices and automatic ticket machines at metro stations you can buy single tickets (ticket unité), one day tickets [3€] (ticket journée) or books of 10 journeys but 5 tickets each of which can be used twice for an hour [9.40€] (carnet 10 voyages).
If you want to buy a bus and metro pass you have to go to the STAR office first in order to get a membership card and then you will be able to buy monthly or weekly tickets (coupon mensuel or hebdomadaire) which are much cheaper. Tickets only need to be stamped once (except two-journey-tickets).
